opponents wrong. thanks to daniel inouye, hawaii has become a modern, prosperous state. many alaskans have a special fond unless for the 50th state, especially i have to say at this time of the year when it's 40 below in fairbanks. daniel inouye began his public career and service at the age of 17 when he entered the army after the attack on pearl harbor. he served with incredible distinction, earning the nation's highest military medal for action in italy. as a member of the senate, senator inouye continued his fierce defense of his state in his partnership with alaska. my preye predecessor, ted steve, knew senator inouye as his brother. they worked together and produced much good for both our states. that will last for generations. when i was elected to this office, senator inouye was one of the first members to reach out to me to ask how he could help. the unique thing about senator inouye was always his quiet approach to all the issues. he provided me quiet advice and helped me learn how this place works. many times i'd be down here at the podium and in the well here waiting for the vo

. yes, i'm still in the christmas spirit. the president meanwhile is in hawaii and won't be returning until tomorrow. now, normally nothing happening would not be big news in washington. nothing happening is kind of the status quo in washington. getting nothing done is to our political system as saying great is to tony the tiger. it's just kind of what we do now. right now, this week, nothing happening is huge news. the reason is that usually when washington doesn't do anything nothing happens. you do nothing, nothing happens. that's how it goes. in fact that's why people call it doing nothing. after you do it, nothing occurs. if washington doesn't do something, a lot happens. all the bush tax cuts expire, the payroll tax cuts expire. doctors participating in medicare, see their reimbursements cut by more than 25%. good luck getting a doctor then. more than a trillion dollars in spending cuts are triggered. the economy probably falls back into recession, and merry christmas and happy new year from washington to you, the american people. this basket of problems is what washington calls

and the two are to pay respects this afternoon to daniel inouye of hawaii. this has been going on for hours. they change the guard every half hour and notables come to pay their respects. senator inouye, of hawaii, first served us as a soldier in world war ii and was a senator, get this, for 50 years. inouye was a war hero. he lost his right arm while leading the platoon into battle in italy and awarded the medal of honor and died on monday of breathing complications at age of 88. he became hawaii's first congressman following statehood in 1969. he won election to the senate in 1962. only 31 people have laid in the cap doll rotunda and the last was gerald ford six years ago and the last senator honored was the democrat humphrey in 1978. he will be escorted to the washington cathedral and returned to hawaii on saturday to honor an american hero who died on monday. senator inouye. >>shepard: senator dole and his wife and harry reid and the rest on the late senator inouye, senator inouye often credited a man he met in world war ii army hospital in italy with getting him into politics. i messag
